My name is Alex Hyer and I started HyerOCD to convey how my life is affected by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In doing so, I wish to dispel common misconceptions and give insight into the nature of these disorders. Additionally, I aim to normalize these disorders and give others a sense of common humanity. It is important to openly discuss mental health issues since there is much taboo around the subject currently. To this end, I hope you find my story fulfilling.
I was not diagnosed with OCD until early 2019 and ADHD in late 2019. Before being aware of my unique mental state, I was unaware of what was happening with me and experienced constant anxiety, panic, and self-loathing. My intrusive thoughts ran unchecked and I was constantly plagued with fears of harming others, disappointing colleagues, and never be good enough. After my first diagnosis, I was prescribed too much medication too quickly and suffered from drug-induced delirium and withdrawals. After being put on an appropriate medication plan and graduating from an Intensive Outpatient Program specializing in OCD, I’m in a much better place and wish to share my experiences with you.
